How should media approach a non professional athlete to ask a question?

As a credentialed media member at events we are often  tasked with asking questions to athletes that have not had any formal media training and they are unsure about how to conduct themselves in front of a camera or microphone.

Here are some tips for media members on how to approach non-professional athletes to get the best results.

When approaching a non-professional athlete for an interview, media should be respectful, understanding of their experience level, and ask questions focused on their specific story and perspective on the sport, avoiding overly aggressive or demanding inquiries; prioritize building rapport and making them feel comfortable sharing their thoughts, rather than treating them like a professional athlete.

Key points to remember:

  • Introduce yourself clearly: Explain who you are and why you’re reaching out to them.
  • Be appreciative: Acknowledge their time and willingness to speak with you.
  • Start with easy questions: Begin with basic details about their involvement in the sport, their motivations, and how they got started.
  • Ask open-ended questions: Encourage them to elaborate on their experiences by asking “why” and “how” questions.
  • Avoid overly technical jargon: Use language that is understandable to a general audience.
  • Be sensitive to their comfort level: If they seem hesitant to answer a question, move on to another topic or ask if they’d prefer not to discuss it.
  • Focus on the positive: Highlight their achievements and dedication to the sport, even if they are not at a professional level.

Example questions for a non-professional athlete:

  • “What initially drew you to this sport?”
  • “What is your favorite part about competing?”
  • “Can you describe a challenging moment you overcame during a recent game/race?”
  • “How do you balance your training with other commitments like school or work?”
  • “What are your goals for the upcoming season?”
  • “What advice would you give to someone just starting out in this sport?”

As a part of the Mushing Media we can tailor these questions to be sport/lifestyle specific.
